I want to do what you do. I have someone say this to me weekly.
Awesome, I don’t blame you.
Being an entrepreneur (for me Business/Human Resources Consulting and Content Writer) is incredible and has amazing perks. The first and probably the most attractive is FREEDOM. Freedom to determine your own destiny. Freedom to create or perform work you love. Freedom to construct your own goals to fit your desired life. Don’t be fooled though FREEDOM IS WORK, and there’s much to learn on a continuous basis.
Here’s 7 Things that I and some of my favorite #beyourownboss crew have learned along the way:
1 – What to do with the NaySayers
Oh the anklebiters. The dream doubters that are constantly telling you why your business idea or entrepreneur plans won’t work. They’re out there and can bite hard, forcing your own doubts to surface. You have two options when dealing with naysayers.
A. Use Them. Use their skepticism and reasons for being cynical to identify potential flaws and risk factors in your business plan and develop strategies to overcome.
B. Eliminate Them. You’re taking control of your work destiny. While you’re it at maybe it’s time to take control of your personal environment and surround yourself around people who are supportive and encouraging.
Kelly Hanner, a rockstar Lifestyle Coach says it best –
2 – Ask For Help
Accounting is my nemesis. College Accounting classes is what kept me from being a 4.0 student. So guess what? I have an accountant. Just because you own a business doesn’t mean you have to be good at everything or know everything. If you want to be successful you can’t be afraid to ask for help. So ask scream for help when and where needed.

3 – Never Stop Learning
Always be learning not just in a classroom but outside of class. Read trade / industry journals, find a mentor, join a professional organization, network. Surround yourself around people you admire and the have the success you desire, and learn from them. Don’t become complacent. Your goal and knowledge should be growth. Like Allie, 3 star Diamond Beachbody Coach says..
4 – Make Generosity Part of Your Growth Strategy
by Dawn Nicole, Graphic Designer and blogger at bydawnnicole.com at pointed out a tip that really wasn’t on my radar until she stated it and when she stated it I couldn’t agree more, make generosity part of your growth strategy. Help others in need of your product or service. Also be generous in your knowledge and experiences. Share with others.
5 – Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
I despised getting up in front of my speech class in college (which seems like a decade ago, oh wait it was). Now I speak to audiences on a regular basis without breaking a sweat. The people who become great, no matter their field, are those who are willing to be uncomfortable over and over again, on the way of mastery. I said yes to things I was afraid. Yes to things I had the foundational skill set and knowledge to do but was far from an expert, and I just read a crap load and learned quickly to get things done.
6 – Be Committed
If you’re looking to start a business because you desire free time, you may want to reconsider. Must start-ups is grueling hard work that requires time, energy, and effort like no other. Early mornings, late nights, and everything in between is what it takes for many entrepreneurs to see progress and success. You have to be willing to do what it takes. Believe that your rewards will be worth the sacrifice and realize you may not reap those rewards for years to come. Meredith Soleau CEO & Founder of 424 Degrees, Social Media & Recruitment Agency sums it up here..
7 – Take Action
Tell Fear to F*ck Off. Easier said than done (don’t I know it). Fear can be a real pain. The paralyzing type. Starting a business might be the scariest thing you do, but do you know when great things happen? When you get out of your comfort zone. Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, Jenna Lento encourages us all..
Even if you aren’t in a position to screw the 9-5 right away, every day do one thing to get you closer. Push yourself beyond what you think is possible. The world needs dreamers, and the world needs doers, but above all the world need dreamers who do and that could be YOU.
